Aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils from sources such as plants to help balance the body's various physical and mental systems.
How does it work? We have at least 5 million cells in our nose linked to smell. When you inhale an aroma, the scent goes to the olfactory receptors in these cells. The olfactory nerves are the only nerves linked directly to the brain. These nerves are connected to the part of the brain which controls memory and emotions. Because of this, what we smell can affect what we feel.
How many times have we smelled a scent associated with a previous time and place and been taken back several years by our memories? Because animals have thousands more receptors in their nose than ours, they can especially benefit from aromatherapy. Animals rely very strongly on their sense of smell and aromatherapy can be used to help treat emotional imbalances (such as aggression, insecurity) and physical problems as well.
Inhaling the oils is not the only way for the aroma to enter a person's or pet's system. Some of them can also be applied directly to the skin and accompanied by massage therapy. Once they are absorbed by the skin, they enter the bloodstream, where it is believed, they can help strengthen the immune system. However, be aware that some oils can cause allergic reactions, and should be used according to package directions. Individuals and pets with sensitive skin should consult their doctor prior to use and consider testing a small patch area first.
Purity of the oils is very important in insuring results. Pure and whole essential oils are preferred over synthetics. In addition, the oils should be stored carefully, so that they are kept away from sun, heat, light, and dampness. For this reason, many are packaged in dark vials or require refrigerated storage.
